Effective Dosage: Defatted fenugreek seed powder is available as raw powder to be added to other foods or liquids and in capsule/tablet form. Consumption of 15-20 grams per day is effective in controlling blood sugar, while higher levels (up to 100 grams) may be needed to effectively suppress appetite for weight loss purposes.
Fenugreek seeds are used as a traditional spice in Asia and Europe. They have a slight maple taste and are often used in production of imitation maple flavorings. Fenugreek seeds contain a high proportion (40%) of a soluble fiber known as mucilage. This fiber forms a gelatinous structure (similar to guar gum) which may have effects on slowing the digestion and absorption of food from the intestine.
At least a few studies have shown a beneficial effect of fenugreek in reducing blood glucose levels and improving glucose tolerance in patients with diabetes. In terms of weight control, the soluble fiber in fenugreek seeds can reduce dietary fat absorption by binding to fatty acids as well as create a sensation of "fullness" and reduced appetite. Finally, because fenugreek seeds contain estrogen-like saponins, blood levels of total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides can be reduced (with no change in HDL) – providing an important heart benefit. In one study, powdered fenugreek seeds (15 grams) soaked in water significantly reduced postprandial glucose and insulin levels following a meal in non-insulin dependent diabetics (NIDDM). Another study showed that an amino acid extracted from fenugreek seeds (4-hydroxyisoleucine) may stimulate insulin secretion (direct beta-cell stimulation) and help control blood sugar levels (in rats and dogs). In a groups of insulin-dependent diabetic patients, defatted fenugreek seed powder (100 grams given in 2 doses of 50g each at lunch/dinner), significantly reduced fasting blood sugar and improved glucose tolerance (over a 10-day trial). There was also a 54% reduction in glucose excretion (24-h urine) and a significant reduction in blood levels of total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL and triglycerides with no change in HDL levels.
