Effective Dosage: There is currently no clinical evidence that papaya or papain is effective as a weight loss supplement at any dosage.
The papaya is a melon like fruit with yellow-orange flesh enclosed in a thin skin that varies in color from green to orange to rose. Papayas are a rich source of vitamin A and C. One half of a small papaya can provide 150% of the recommended dietary intake of Vitamin C. It is low in calories, fat free, cholesterol free, and a good source of potassium, folate, and fiber.
The papaya enzyme called papain, is used as a meat tenderizer because it breaks down tough meat fibers. There have been a number of commercial diet pills claiming that papain "digests fatty deposits", however this is not true. There is no clinical evidence that suggests papaya or papain aids weight loss.
These statements about papaya have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Papaya is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
